The ‘Ebony Phallus’ Myth: Race, Porn and Sexual Stereotypes

Adult media has long promoted racial stereotypes about penis size and sexual performance. One of the most persistent is the idea that Black men are naturally larger or more sexually powerful.

Porn amplifies extremes

Adult performers are selected for visual impact, and categories are marketed around exaggerated fantasies. That makes porn a poor guide to what bodies are typically like in any racial or ethnic group.

Stereotypes can be harmful

Reducing people to assumptions about their body can create pressure, fetishization and unrealistic expectations. It can also make individuals feel they must perform according to a racial stereotype.

Individual variation matters more

Human bodies vary widely within every population. Sexual compatibility depends on communication, attraction and technique far more than a stereotype attached to skin color.

Fantasy categories may exist in porn, but real people deserve to be treated as individuals rather than as embodiments of a marketing label.
