Sex During Your Period: Is It Safe?

Period sex is generally possible for consenting adults, and some people find it comfortable or even helpful for cramps. Others simply prefer to avoid it. Both choices are normal.

Pregnancy is still possible

The chance may be lower at some points in the cycle, but sperm can survive for several days and ovulation does not always occur on a predictable schedule. Menstruation should not be treated as birth control.

STIs can still be transmitted

Blood and other body fluids can carry sexually transmitted infections. Condoms and other barriers can reduce risk.

Prepare for the mess

A dark towel, shower sex or simply choosing lighter-flow days can make cleanup easier. Avoid inserting anything that is not body-safe simply because you are worried about staining sheets.

Listen to comfort

Cramps, tenderness or dryness can make sex less appealing on some days. On others, extra lubrication from menstrual fluid may make penetration easier.

There is no medical requirement to avoid sex just because someone is menstruating. The decision should come down to comfort, consent, protection and personal preference.
