Escort or Sex Worker? Understanding the Language

Terms such as “escort,” “prostitute” and “sex worker” are often used interchangeably, but they can carry different meanings and levels of stigma.

Escort

An escort generally advertises paid companionship. Depending on the individual and local law, that may or may not include sexual services. The word itself does not automatically define what happens during a booking.

Sex worker

Sex worker is a broader term used for adults who earn money through sexual services or adult content. It can include escorts, adult performers, cam models and others.

Why language matters

Words can shape how people are treated. Neutral, accurate language avoids assuming services, consent or personal circumstances.

Local laws vary

Legal rules around paid sexual services differ dramatically by jurisdiction. Anyone discussing or arranging adult services should understand the law where they are.

Whatever term is used, adults providing services retain the same right to set boundaries and consent to specific activities as anyone else.
